The Same Room

(c) 2019 Dr. Sherry-Ann Brown

It was the same room!

Both patients passed away
In the same room
Several years apart.
What was it
About that room?
What is it
About the hospital,
That breaks our heart?

I couldn't look
At the patient's
Family member's face
Sitting next to me
In the patient's room
In person.

I couldn't look
At the patient's
Family member's face
On FaceTime.
This time,
I just couldn't look.

Not at their grieving faces.
So instead,
I looked
At the hair,
The chair,
The wall,
The tall IV pole.
The hand,
The edge of the phone,
The hospital gown.
The lapel,
The box of tissues,
The monitor,
The ventilator.
The bed,
The computer,
The sink.

"There is no rush,"
I said.
"Take all the time you need,"
And excused myself.
To give the family some privacy
With their loved one -
The patient.

And to give myself some privacy
To reach deep down inside of me
And pull back in those tears
That threatened to spill over the brim
Of my eyelids.
To reverse the course
Of the moisture
That was attempting to saturate
My eyelashes.

I couldn't bare it,
As I heard the patient's family by phone
Talking to the patient,
As if sitting together on a swing loveseat
On the porch
On a quiet summer night.
I couldn't decide
Whether the summer night
Was warm or cool.

It definitely wasn't too hot.
It definitely wasn't cold.
But it was too much.
I stepped away from the room altogether
To let the family
Talk to the patient.

To let them reminisce together.
To let them close.
